Our Story:
Providence to Cambridge

A Journey of Creative Freedom (a short history)

Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1636 by Cambridge scholar and religious freedom seeker Roger Williams. Centuries later, on the stage of the fantastic Trinity Repertory Company in that very city, Kathy met Tim. Somewhere along the way, they decided to bring a piece of the New England spirit to the UK. In the 1990s, Providence the shop was born.

Our business was built on the Shaker philosophy based on the principles of utility, simplicity, and honesty. We believe there is profound beauty in character—in pieces that carry a story and materials that reflect their origins.

Our business has grown over 30 years. Whether we are working from our Cambridge workshop or welcoming you to our retail shop at Burwash Manor Barns, our philosophy remains unchanged: an appreciation for the beauty in simplicity.

Our commitment to excellence has earned us design awards and features in national press. We were notably described as "Divine Providence" in a feature on the Remodelista website.

Based in our Cambridge workshop, we create handcrafted cabinetry, both freestanding and built-in, utilising traditional joinery. Most of our work is painted in Farrow & Ball or the Colours of London from Mylands paint ranges. Anything we create has soul put into it. Our service is very much bespoke. See the cabinetry page for more details and examples of our work.

In addition to our built pieces we also source and restore antiques ranging from traditional Georgian, rustic and characterful to 20th Century, contemporary and sleek. Each has a bit of magic. See in-store for our current selection.
